St. Joseph's celebrates 110 years -- by Alexis Etcheson

The smiling faces of the patients and staff at St. Joseph’s Home greet you when you walk in the door. This friendly environment is not new to St. Joseph’s, who marked its 110th anniversary this year. St. Joseph’s Home originally opened Dec. 16, 1892, being named after St. Joseph, patron of the aging. The sisters of St. Francis of Immaculate Conception established the home at its original location on Smith Street, but in the mid-1940s, due to a deteriorating building, the home was moved to Heading Avenue where the home would sit on an additional 13 acres of land. The construction to the building was slow due to a lack of funds, but in 1958 the home was reopened at its new location. .......more

The Illinois Ballet, with Mary Price Boday as artistic director, will present “The Power of Dance” on May 18 at the Peoria Civic Center Theater. “Professional Dance Lives in Peoria” is a sort of subtitle. “Ballet Etudes” will begin the program, taking from the daily class ritual. “A number of choreographers of this century and the last, working in both classical and modern dance idioms, have chosen to use the practice exercises and set progressions of ‘the class’ as material for a staged spectacle, and these ballets are among the most fascinating and popular creations in the repertory” reads an advance notice.......more

Hate violence targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people remains a daily reality, according to an April 12, 2002 National Gay and Lesbian Task Force report.A 2000 Federal Bureau of Investigation report states that in 1999, there were a total of 7,876 hate crime incidents reported in the U. S., and of these, sexual orientation bias was the cause of 1,317 incidents........more
